The following all happens immediately after the assassination attempt on Paladin Brannigans life and the invasion by the forces of Iuz and the Theocracy. Day 0 marks this day.
The Black Legion Rises Part 1
Dakken and Felicity were approached by Scalpel(a Dwarf working for the Thieves in Y’bent) and offered a mission. The mission entailed travelling to Greyhawk and sewing dissent into the nobles who have accepted the Theocratin invaders.
Felicity agreed to go on the understanding that she could also look for her family (Father and Uncle).
After a day of preparation, Dakken, Felicity and Kyle set off through the Flint Hills (having welcome access through the Micronoid village). During the travel through the mines Felicity and Dakken experienced a vision (Kyle could not see it) of a ruined shrine to an ancient Dwarven god, Therin. Upon reaching Goldenhelm Dakken, Felicity and Kyle met with the Elders who dismissed all talk of the dangers from Iuz and the Theocracy. The debate got heated when Felicity brought up the name of Therin. The three were told to leave Goldenhelm immediately but were able to try some recruiting on the way out. After being thrown out of Goldenhelm, The 3 became 5 as they were joined by the only 2 dwarves who believed in the cause and were able to get out. A young brother and sister duo by the name of Carsen and Mathilda Goldenhelm. Travelling further through the Flint Hills the group came upon the signs of large forces amassing in the tunnels. Moving into the old side access tunnels to evade them the group was attacked by something (possibly vampiric) and Felicity managed to fend it off with a shrine to Therin that was set into the walls.
The group emerged from the Flint Hills and headed for a “well” that Kyle remembers that he used to use to sneak in and out of Greyhawk. The well turned out to be a sewer access point and so the group had to wade/swim through a river of excrement to get inside the city perimeter.
The three dwarves stayed in the sewer tunnels while Kyle and Felicity did some scouting in the city.
All Demi-Humans in Greyhawk had been rounded up and taken to an island on the river. They are being told that they are being repatriated and sent to lands set aside for them but the grim truth seems to be that they are being executed and their bodies dumped into the river. Dakken hatched a plan to surreptitiously break a small group of fighters and engineers off the island.
They found that Felicities family had all be killed and that the smearscoops(from the previous adventure) were now occupying her father’s old house. That night the group mounted an assault on the house and killed everyone inside. During the fight Carsen was Mortally wounded but Felicity made an offering to Therin and was able to lay on hands and cure Carsens wounds. They collected all of the title deeds to Felicity’s estate and any money and jewels which could be easily carried. The house was then set ablaze.
The basement of the house was located from the sewer level and tunnelled into. Felicity then took the titles for all of her fathers and uncles businesses and buildings and sold them to a merchant friend. Along with the cash the group were also given 100 sets of armour, shields, boots and axes to equip any fighters that they set free.
The night before the mission Kyle wakes Dakken up after an old dwarf in shiny black armour makes a delivery of a Halberd wrapped in black cloth. Unfurling the cloth reveals it to be the battle standard of Therin.
All members of the group used weapon black on their weapons and armour and grease and soot to camouflage themselves and under Felicity’s guidance swore an oath to Therin.
A length of rope was secured from the river and dragged across and tethered on the island. Dakken, Felicity and Kyle swam across to the island and went round spreading the word for anyone of fighting age to meet in the centre of the camp. Meeting the gathered prisoners, went badly as the elder dwarves didn’t believe that they were being executed and so raised the alarm. Immediately the guard towers started firing on the camp. The group fled back to the rope and found that there were already some people there gathered and ready to leave. Carsen and Mathilda were on the other side of the bank and in danger of being found by a patrol of guards. Felicity and Dakken moved across and engaged them leaving Kyle behind on the island to shepherd people across.
With as many people as possible freed they headed back into the sewers. Deep under Greyhawk, the assembled group were given a choice. Either Swear allegiance to Therin or follow the markings that will take them through the sewers and out of Greyhawk. The group split into 2 and the remaining escapees were sworn into the legion and taken back to the basement hideout.
Back in the hideout a roll call was taken. Kyle was missing. The newly formed legion consisted of:
17 Dwarven Fighters;
2 Dwarven Engineers;
6 Elven Archers;
Later on that Evening Kyle returned, very drunk covered in blood and accompanied by 23 Halflings.
With a guerrilla force now assembled the legion moved through the sewers to find the cellars below the largest Theocracy Temple in the city. The foundations of the building were mined out and the structure was left propped up on a triggered support. A water clock was set to the trigger and after sealing up the basement hideout the legion left Greyhawk via the sewers under the cover of darkness and marched back over the Flint Hills and back to Y’bent. Several days later the Temple collapsed in on itself…
The Black Legion Rises Part 2
0 + 6 weeks
Back in Y’bent the new formed Black Legion are being housed in several inns (the main one being The Velvet Glove owned by Master Scern). Dakken and Felicity met with Scalpel and discussed the promise of land and funding to form the Black Legion HQ in Y’bent. Scalpel assigned a paymaster (Administrator Skittle) and his helper Ebon (Basically a Drow Spy working for Scalpel) to help with the set up.
A suitable plot of land was found on the outskirts of Y’bent which is on sturdy bedrock. The troops all moved out here and lived in Tents (cot beds being provided for the older miners, the halfling papa, and Felicity). The building of the HQ went to this timescale:
0 + 7 weeks – Wooden Barracks built and equipped
0 + 8 weeks – Foundations for the temple dug out of the bedrock. The stone that is quarried is then being cut into pieces that can be used later for the building of the Livery/Armoury/Smith/Store building.
0+ 9 Weeks – Temple foundations complete, Keystone placed and dedicated.
The keystone for the temple
during the second week of the building process (0 + 8) Dakken and Felicity took a team up to the old dwarven quarry in the Flint Hills that they found when first coming to Y’bent(0-2 weeks). Felicity prayed to Therin for guidance and picked out the perfect piece of stone. The engineers were directed in the exact cuts to make and then the stone was quarried and brought back to Y’bent. Skittle found the best stonemason in Y’bent (A lizardman named Slithus) and he set about carving the stone into the required shape and inscribing a dedication to Therin along with the names of all the founding Legionaries around the base. The top of the stone has the names of the originators (Dakken, Felicity, Kyle, Carsen and Mathilda). The Keystone is a single piece of a granite like stone standing 15’ high and 4’ wide.
Building and training
During the time of the build process, Dakken and Felicity have also arranged for the Uniforms of the legion to be made up. This will take several weeks to complete the order.
Training of the troops and officers has also been started. A daily routine of:
sunrise – Reveille
1 hours square bashing
1 hours weapons drills
Start work for the day on the HQ build. a lunch stop is taken during this
1 hour before sunset – more drills till sunset
After meal there is 1 hour of tactics training and then the night is their own apart from a watch rota.
The 6 elven Hunters have been put to use and are bringing a steady supply of game, deer, boar etc back to supplement the food. Ebon has been working with them.
The dedication ceremony
On the day that the Keystone is put in place work stops on the building and Felicity holds a dedication ceremony in which the temple and all the land of the camp is blessed and consecrated in the name of Therin. A large celebration was then held with plenty of alcohol, fine food and high spirits. Dakken made sure that he was one of the last men standing and that he could drink with the best of them be it dwarf, elf or Minotaur.
On the night of the ceremony Dakken and Felicity were both visited by the same dream. In the dream they awoke in an expanding pool of blood lying on a stone floor. All around is the sound of battle and vague blurred shapes and movement within metres it is impossible to discern actual details. A tall figure approaches out of the blur and begins to take form, it is a tall skeletal warrior bedecked in dulled black armour a red flame glowing in its eyes. It stoops and picks them up by the throat asking "Where is it? Where is it? Where is…. Now what do we have here?” he brings his taloned fingers up to your eyes and they both awoke screaming.
A couple of days later a scout on watch spots a dwarf covered in blood staggering towards the camp from the direction of the Flint Hills. A squad is sent out to collect him and bring him back. While tending to his wounds the dwarf utters that Goldenhelm has fallen.
*The Fall of Goldenhelm *
Timeline – 0 + 8Weeks
Administrator Skittle finds a couple of experienced adventurers looking for work at the Adventurers guild in Y’bent. These adventurers are taken to the camp of the Black Legion and introduced to Dakken. They agree to sign on with the Legion although not to swearing allegiance to Therin just yet. They are given the role of advisors in the legion.
The 2 adventurers are Arlo Thackrin, a Human Ranger from the Shieldlands and Erik Ralphson, a human Fighter from the Northlands.
They are welcomed into the camp and introduced to some of the key members of the legion such as Gruff, Kyle (who has taken a shine to Erik), Felicity and Ebon.
Arlo has been out hunting with the elven scouts and has already impressed with his bow skills. Erik has been drinking with the Minotaurs…
Timeline – 0 + 9 weeks 3days
Injured Dwarf runner enters the camp (See The Black Legion Rises pt2).
A runner is sent to Y’bent to alert Skittle. Within the hour the runner returns on a cart along with Skittle and Scalpel. Orders are set to move up on Goldenhelm to seek out survivors and to try to stop the progress of the forces through the Flint Hills.
Timeline – 0 + 9 Weeks 5 Days
Dakken, Felicity, Kyle, Erik, Arlo, Ebon, Carson and Mathilda accompanied by 3 elven scouts and 2 halflings move up to and into the entrance to the tunnels beneath the Flint Hills. Gruff, a Squad of Dwarves and the remaining Elves are left about half a days walk from the Flint Hills and given orders to watch for forces, but not engage unless necessary. They will also be ready that if a runner is sent back from the Tunnels they can make a move to reinforce.
Moving into the tunnels with the Halflings scouting ahead. Just before the party reach the micanoid village they are halted by the sounds of fighting and the smell of burning fungus. Kyle moves forward and returns to report back that there is a small raiding party of Drow and Troglodytes fighting with the micanoids ahead. There is a Drow Mage and a Drow Priest accompanying them.
Arlo and the 3 Elven Archers performed a hit and run missile attack on the Drow Mage(killing him) in the cave. Some of the Trogs and Drow pursued them into the tunnels where Erik and Dakken put them down.
The group then rushed the cave and started working through the fighting Drow and Trogs. Arlo and the Elves stayed in the tunnel entrance and peppered them all with arrows.
The Priestess started chanting and ordered one of her bodyguards to “Burn the Wagons”. A badly injured drow scampered off towards the rear of the caves. He was stopped short as Ebon revealed himself (after using an invisibility spell to get himself over to the other side of the cave).
The priestess started attacking Dakken and Erik and very quickly realised what a bad idea that is as they dispatched her easily. After the fight the area was searched revealing very little apart from a horde of drow weaponry and a magical whip (which was trying to crawl away).
Kyle and the other 2 halflings scouted through the next part of the tunnels and returned to report that there was a rock bridge leading over to a large rail cart(the hand cranked cart) guarded by some Trogs. Kyle and his men headed back over and assassinated the trog Guards.
While everyone was healing, a runner was sent to fetch Gruff and his squad from their holding point outside the flint hills.
The cart was then searched and found to hold 3 Drow repeating Ballistas, a Cage with 20 Dwarf prisoners and some crates of Magical mines. 2 Of the ballistas were unloaded and setup on the micanoid cave side of the bridge and Arlo and Ebon mined the bridge itself (leaving small indicators as to where the safe path is for the party).
The Dwarves were released from the cages. They were all ok apart from a bit of weakness and some signs of mild beatings. The Dwarves are all from Underfalls which was taken in force by the drow. Most of the citizens of Underfalls have either been slain or put to work mining.
13 of the dwarves decided that they would accompany the party through to Goldenhelm and were armed with the drow weaponry. The remaining 7 stayed with the ballistas with instructions that should the enemy push over the bridge they are to inflict as much damage as possible and then split up and head towards Ybent and The Black Legion Camp and raise the alarms.
After a nights rest the party loaded up the Cart and moved through the tunnels towards Goldenhelm (occassionally stopping for Kyle to scout up ahead).
The nearer to Goldenhelm the party got the stronger the stench of death and decay became.
When they got up to Goldenhelm they could see that the large gates had been smashed inwards and there was a large pile of corpses in front of them.
The corpses looked as though they had been dead for Months and even years.
Goldenhelm itself was bathed in a sickly green glow and a heavy layer of fog at ground level. All the windows and doors at ground level have been smashed in.
Moving into the city and heading towards the temple (where the survivors are meant to be holed up). The Archers were deployed to the rooftops and followed the force down the streets.
At the end of the street is a square dedicated to a Dwarven Mining god, Kron. There was movement in the mist in the distance. Just then one of the archers cried out. Dakken got Gruff to boost him up to the roof while Arlo scaled the building on the opposite side of the street. A pair of Dwarven Ghouls were feasting on one of the elven archers. Dakken took them both down.
At that moment the main party (still down on the street) noticed that the figures across the square were moving towards them.
One of the Elven Archers on the roof with Arlo screamed out as another ghoul clawed at him and Dakken noticed that more ghouls were climbing up the building he was on.
The main body of the force were rushed on all sides by zombies and ghouls. Dakken jumped down from the roof using his shield and ghoul heads to break his fall. Arlo and the archers climbed down from the roof on their side of the road.
Arlo started falling the troops back into the buildings while Erik and Felicity got their side into the buildings near them. Dakken tried to fight his way across to help the troops fall back. Arrows were raining in from distance, some with gas globes on the end of them.
After seeing the bulk of the troops into the buildings Arlo slinked off in search of the sniper. Dakken and Erik moved across the square to take on the huge figure that was making its way towards them.
Arlo made his way stealthily through the city to the spot he identified as being the best possible snipers nest, the upper reaches of the temple. He climbed up the wall and over the balcony. Unfortunately he tripped an alarm on the way. Moving inside the temple roof he spotted the snipers OP.
Further inside a figure revealed himself. He was dressed in Iuzian battle dress. He talked to Arlo about the way that the forces of IUZ had swept through the Shieldlands. The pair circled each other and finally the Iuzian archer snapped and drew his bow. They exchanged arrows until both their quivers ran out and then the Iuzian made for his OP. Arlo was quicker and intercepted him with a short sword to the vitals. Just before the Iuzian could utter his last Arlo then took his head.
Down in the square Erik and Dakken fought the giant warrior who seemed to regenerate his wounds easily. After several minutes of combat Dakken realised that the Warrior was wearing a glowing amulet. They managed to inflict enough damage to temporarily put the giant down and Dakken ripped the amulet from him. At this point his wounds stopped healing.
Searching the giant Erik found the warrior in possession of an ancient Nordic Bastard Sword.
The party regrouped and moved into the temple to find a scene of devastation. In the crypt they found that a lot of the tombs had been ransacked. There were marks on the floor that looked like a section had been slid out. Sliding the section out they found a set of stairs leading down to an ancient vault which was being used as a Temple to Therin. Sheltering in the temple were a group of Dwarves. Mainly Women and children and a few elders. At the back of the temple an old dwarf with long white hair and a long white beard was lying on a slab. His eyes bandaged. Dakken
recognised the old dwarf from the dream he had. The old dwarf spoke up. He seemed to think that Dakken is Therin and “Knew he would come to save them”.
He alluded to the dwarves of Deephaven who are worshippers of Therin and would be able to help in the fight. No-one knows where Deephaven is but the old dwarf mentioned that there is a map hidden within a statue of Therin which is housed in the gallery in Greyhawk.
Arlo and Erik took the dwarves from the vault along with the miners and the legion back to the barracks while Dakken and Felicity headed off to Greyhawk to find the statue and the map.
A Night at the Museum
After arriving in Greyhawk Dakken and Felicity were met by Alan (a member of the Greyhawk resistance). He took them to the hideout of a resistance cell and there they were introduced to Brandon, Zurath and Dirk. Dakken and Felicity explained that they were looking for the statue of Therin but that they were also willing to help with the guerrilla war against the Theocracy in Greyhawk.
Word was spreading round Greyhawk that in a couple of days the National Gallery of Oerth was having a grand re-opening and would be displaying a new commemorative work by the Theocratin Artist Von Shtupple. The flyer for this also explained that on the second day of this 2 day event there would be a mass destruction of all of the unholy items which had previously been displayed in the museum. The museum is the most likely place that the statue would be.
The group decided that the best plan would be to go to the grand opening to have a look around the gallery and scope it out from the inside with a view to returning at night and securing the map, then causing as much mayhem as possible to spoil the event for the Theocracy.
Zurath and Dakken scouted the sewers first and tried to find a way in through the drainage which could be used for the break in. A grate had been installed just before the gallery. With a bit of effort Zurath and Dakken were able to bend the bars enough for them to slip through. They then found that they were in the sewerage branches of the gallery itself and that there were plenty of routes up into the gallery but they all involved climbing up through the toilets.
The day of the Gallery opening
Dakken and Felicity had been provided with forged papers by the resistance showing that Felicity was a Theocratin noble and Dakken her slave. For Dakken this meant stripping out of all armour and weaponry and donning a simple woollen, hooded robe.
The group then set off to the gallery opening. At the doors Dakken and Felicity were stopped and searched. Their papers were thoroughly checked.
All the while Dakken was being mistreated by the guards (sly kicks, slaps and hair pulling). Dakken was then forced to wear his hood up and was also put on a thin leather leash.
Walking round the gallery it was clear that all the previous artworks had been removed and replaced with Theocratin pieces showing the glory of the Theocracy through the ages.
The group all took note of doorways and potential traps and alarms (Brandon and Dirk using their thieving abilities to scan for these properly). In the centre of the main hall was a large plinth awaiting the large Von Shtupple piece commissioned specially for this. On either side of the large entrance doors stood large Giant Iron Armour Suits.
After a good reconnaissance of the gallery the party headed back to the hideout to prepare for the evenings “break in”.
The plan was that Dirk and Brandon would go over the fence to the rear of the gallery and enter through the warehouse. Dakken, Zurath and Felicity would move through the sewers and emerge through the drainage pipes/toilets.
When Dirk and Brandon had successfully entered they would come and get the other 3 from the toilets when it was clear.
They all prepared by covering themselves in faceblack and weaponblack and padding out their armour (Dakken and Felicity already carry this as standard Black Legion kit).
Dirk scaled the fence and found a possible way in. There was a room near the warehouse where a clerk was pouring over ledgers and cataloguing the contents of the vaults. Dirk decided that it would be a good idea to knock the clerk out and steal/read some of the ledgers to maybe help pinpoint the statue. He managed however to overdo the knockout blow and killed the clerk… He grabbed as many of the papers as he could and ran back to Brandon. They then started exploring the warehouse and the rear of the gallery. They located the vault door and Brandon set to work cracking the multiple tumblers. Dirk disappeared off to find the other 3.
Dakken, Felicity and Zurath had made their way through the sewers and after a brief struggle had forced the wooden box surrounding a toilet cubicle to allow them access to the washroom.
Dirk found his way to the large doors through into the main gallery and looking through could see a foppish gent shouting orders at a pair of clerks while a pair of chained ogres moved a large trolley across the floor towards the plinth. The trolley contained a large item draped in a cloth.
Dirk swung one of the doors open. The Fop sent one of the clerks to investigate why the door kept swinging. Dirk waited till the clerk was through and deftly dropped him with a backstab.
When the moment was right Dirk slipped through the door and followed the shadows through to the toilet and met up with the others.
They knew now that it wasn’t long until they were discovered and so thought they’d better work on the element of surprise while they still had it.
Charging through the doors from the toilet, Zurath and Dakken made a move for the Ogres while Dirk dealt with the Fop. The clerk dropped his clipboard and ran in terror.
Dirk dispatched the fop by brutally punching him round the head with his brawling.
Dakken and Zurath dispatched the first ogre with ease but the second one managed to grab Dakken and was bearhugging the life out of him. Felicity started chanting and inciting Hatred in Zurath towards the ogre. Filled with the rage Zurath started chopping the ogre down giving Dakken the opportunity to break free from its grasp. Once freed he joined Zurath in cleaving it to pieces.
Now a pair of black orbs had descended from the upper level and were searching round with glowing eyes. The Iron Giants in the doorway stepped off the podiums and stood across the main doors bellowing “ALARM, ALARM” over and over. The party decided this was the time to get out of there quickly.
Meanwhile in the office with the vault door, Brandon was well on his way to cracking the safe. A clerk stepped into the office and started questioning him…until he fell on Brandons blade that is.
Brandon returned to opening the vault. He was successful and once opened the vault revealed a set of stone steps descending down into a cellar.
Brandon swept the stairs and found that every second step was trapped. He worked his way down disarming them as he went. Brandon then moved from room to room finding ancient artefacts from different races, A room full of Elven treasures, a room full of Lizardman treasures. When he entered a room full of Halfling wares he encountered a rather startled clerk currently alphabetising and logging the shelves. Brandon made sure that he would not be cataloguing ever again.
The next room Brandon entered was the Dwarven room. At this point Dirk, Dakken, Zurath and Felicity joined him.
After a quick search they found the statue of Therin (which looks spookily like Dakken) and found the hidden panel behind the shield boss. Rotating the shield boss of the statue revealed a cube of polished igneous stone marked with pictographic inscriptions.
Having found the map and with the alarms sounding the party made for the exit. Dakken retrieved an ancient Dwarven shield from a shelf as he had not brought his on this mission due to the constraints of the tunnel.
The group started leaving via the same way that Dirk had entered. Dirk decided that he wanted to finish the second part of the mission intended for the night i.e. the Sabotage and vandalism element.
He grabbed a torch and headed back to the main gallery room and started lighting as many banners and exhibits as possible. The Iron Giants started moving forwards and swinging towards Dirk and were crushing anything in their way underfoot.
Having set light to as much of the gallery as possible Dirk made for the exits and met up with the rest of the group outside.
They then skirted through the backstreets until they could safely climb back down into the sewers and get back to the hideout.
In the next few days reports came back to the resistance of the cancellation of the reopening festival due to the fire in the gallery. The artist Von Shtupple was reported to have been caught in the blaze as he was supervising the installation of his artwork. The destruction of the blasphemous pieces held in the gallery vaults has been postponed until a later date.
Dakken Grimjaw, Dwarf on Campus
This follows directly on from “A Night At The Museum”. Some Artistic license is used in this as this has been written about 6 Months after the event and it’s from memory – Ste
After retrieving the artefact from the Museum in Greyhawk, Dakken and Felicity realise that they need to get to the University to find someone fluent in ancient dwarven. The Canals are the best option for travelling.
Disguising themselves as a well to do lady and her Dwarven slave (using papers they had made by the resistance for the museum scoping session). A cart is procured and false compartments are added to allow the stowage of armour and weapons. The cart is then filled with some batons of cloth and some small trinkets to represent a ladies travelling goods. Dakken is still wearing the leather leash he was made to wear at the museum.
The board a canal boat with 2 Theocratin guards. Down the river the guards start getting frisky with Felicity and then start searching through the cart. a fight ensues and both the guards are quickly despatched. Dakken Garrottes one of the guards with the leash and the bodies are dumped over the side into the reeds. The mess on the boat is covered with some of the cloth on the cart.
At the terminal Dakken and Felicity got off as quickly as possible and boarded the first stage they could heading in the right direction. Felicity was allowed in the main carriage of the stage but Dakken was forced to sit in a trailer with the cargo and a Halfling. Dakken and the Halfing were manacled. The stage left the coaching house and headed off towards the university.
On the journey the halfling gets to know Dakken. He is Donald Stoutheart and ‘Belongs’ to the Theocratin Nobleman and his wife that are up front with Felicity. He is often mistreated by them. Dakken knows that they will be getting off the stage before Donald and so decides to try and give him a chance to escape at some point along the way. He carefully slid his hand axes from the cart and using one as a makeshift anvil he starts chopping at the links on the chains of Donald. He manages to break the chains but in doing so one of the guards on the outside of the stage caught them and makes a move to attack. Very soon the guards have been despatched and the nobles in the carriage with Felicity flee, The Nobleman turning into a Raven before flying off.. Back down the road a dust cloud can be seen coming towards them. The bodies of the guards and the mess in the boat must have been found. Dakken slaps the horses of the stage and sends them off down the road at a pace. He and Donald hide off the track in the woods. The riders show up and are indeed on the trail of the murderers. Felicity spins the line that they attacked the guards and have taken off with the stage. The guard captain sends his troops off after the coach and he stays behind to look after Felicity.
The Guard captain started getting a bit frisky with Felicity until a swift chop from Dakkens axe brought his libido into check. The body is dragged off the roads into the woods on the opposite side of the track.
Felicity, Donald and Dakken decide that it will be safer to avoid the roads completely and cut through the forests and fields to get to the University. After a few miles of walking they reach the edge of the forests and can see a massive line of siege forces entrenched in the fields surrounding the university. The only way to get through the line will be to wait until cover of darkness.
Darkness comes and the trio slip through the maze of tents and siege weapons but Dakken stumbles and alerts guards. The party run off across the fields pursued by dogs. a dog catches Dakken and brings him down. Dakken fights the dog off and the threesome head towards the uni boundaries. As they approach the university clumsiness strikes Dakken again and this time all three plummet into a pit trap. Very soon they are dragged from the pit at weapon point by a group of militia. They lead them onto University grounds and then into an Inn. The innkeeper is waiting. She is a large lady and quite mean with it.
After interrogation and much checking back that the stories check out Dakken and Felicity are released by the militia to conclude their business on the campus. They manage to secure a single dorm room for themselves to use for a few days while they complete their research.
Over the next few days there is a change in Felicity as she remembers what it was like to be a student on campus again. Dakken attracts a following of athletic types who train with him in the quads each day(this all came about after one of the main ‘Jocks’ made fun of Dakkens appearance and challenged him to spar with training weapons. Dakken did not hold back and bested the youth). Donald is enjoying living the ife with the students and has also managed to buy himself new clothes and equipment courtesy of Dakken.
Donald decides that as he has a new life now he would like to spend it following Dakken and chronicling his deeds in poem, drawing and song.
They managed to track down the Dwarven History lecturer named Professor Thane and showed him the artefact. He was taken aback by it but agreed to help them solve the puzzle hidden within the ancient carvings. That night Dakken and Donald were drinking heavily with some students. On the way back to the dorm they were jumped by a gang dressed in black. Unfortunately for them, they chose to attack Dakken and there was only 4 of them. The campus guard turned up and tried to arrest Dakken and Donald. They are taken before Professor Thorn (Dean of the college) and warned not to cause trouble.
They returned to the dorm to find that it had been searched thoroughly and there is no sign of Felicity. The pair decide to wait for Felicity to return. A few hours later a rock is thrown through the window. wrapped round the rock is a note summoning Dakken to come to the docks alone and to bring the artefact with him or else Felicity will be killed.
Dakken sends Donald to get the campus guards with the idea that they will arrive after Dakken has managed to rescue Felicity and so can help if it gets messy but not risk her life.
At the docks Dakken is met by a gang dressed in black like the ones that assaulted him earlier. They are standing on a barge and Felicity is standing on a box with a noose round her neck.
A Dwarf in robes steps forward. He reveals himself to be Professor Thane. He orders Dakken to hand over the artefact as he cannot allow Therin back into the world as he caused so much damage to it during his first reign. As Thane speaks he starts to rant more and is becoming more agitated and frantic the more that Dakken resists him.
Dakken does not back down and soon Thane snaps and orders his men to attack.
Once the fight starts it doesn’t take long for Dakken to cleave through the mob and fight his way onto the barge where Thane is making his way to Felicity. Dakken beats him there and cuts her down before turning on Thane. At that point Professor Thorn and the Campus guards arrive and take control. Thane is broken and babbling now.
Dakken, Felicity and Donald are taken to Thorns office. She explains that Thane is now a mental wreck but he has been said that the writing on the artefact is the location of a mythical city buried deep beneath the Flint Hills and known as Deephaven. The writing is half Ancient Dwarven and Half Ancient Drow.
Thorn arranges to send them back to Y’bent with magic and gives strict instructions to never see Dakken on the campus again. Thane will be dealt with but it is clear that he is in no mental state to be punished properly.
Back at the Black Legion camp Ebon looks at the artefact and can indeed see the ancient drow writing on it. This is clearly what the Iuz forces were looking for when they ransacked Goldenhelm.
The Quest for Deephaven
The move for The Deep
After Being sent back to Y’bent by Professor Thorn (Dakken Grimjaw – Dwarf on Campus), The officers are gathered together to discuss the next steps. The artefact is leading towards the location of Deephaven and all directions point to Underfalls within the Flint Hills. The forces of Iuz are strong within the Hills now and so taking a large force into unknown territory would be an unwise manoeuvre. Instead a small scout group will head in to try and find Deephaven and then once located the main army can be summoned if need be. The group tasked with going in is Dakken, Felicity, Kyle, Dirk Condor, Ebon and Al.
Gathering their equipment the group made the hike up into the Hills and to the checkpoint at the Micanoid village. Sgt Gruff was waiting with his detachment. He is given orders that they are heading to Underfalls and that if they don’t return within 14 days then presume the worst and send a larger force in to investigate.
They set off through the caverns towards Underfalls.
About 1 days walk into the hills they are ambushed by Drow scouts hidden in clouds of shadow. They are despatched quickly.
Further down the tunnel and they come across a section that has been narrowed down with large stacks of rubble on either side. At the other end of the tunnel is a barricade and pair of Ballista aiming right down the centre. Dirk and Kyle crawled along each side of the tunnel on top of the rubble and pounced over the barricades into the guards. 2 large Ogres turned and started firing the Ballista down the tunnel towards Dakken and Felicity. Dakken caught one of the harpoons on his shield as he was running at them.
A brief scuffle later and all of the guards had been killed before they could raise an alarm. The party continued down the tunnels ever wary of ambush.
Excavations at Underfalls
As they emerge from the tunnels into a large natural cavern. Underfalls is no longer there. Instead there is a scene of devastation. Large spoil heaps litter the floor of the cavern and by the magma shield is a mining camp. Enslaved dwarves occasionally come out pushing carts and tip debris onto the heaps.
The floor is covered in thousands and thousands of corpses and skeletons. Most likely an army waiting to be resurrected.
Dakken and Felicity sneak forward to one of the spoil heaps and wait for the next dwarf to come out. The dwarf cart pusher appears. He has another dwarf clutching his wrist as he is pushing.
When he draws close Dakken and Felicity call out to him. He explains that they are being told to dig down and look for something. They are being guarded by undead controlled by a few necromancers. Dakken and Felicity explain to him to go back to the camp and to start spreading the word that if they find something they are to hide it and tell them. The party will bring some weapons and supplies for them to use in the fight but whatever happens they must not let the Iuzians get their hands on whatever they are looking for. They are given instructions to flee towards Y’bent as soon as they can after the distraction is created.
Over the next couple of days the party retrieve some of the weapons from the defence post and help smuggle them mining camp in the carts.
Soon the news reaches them that they have found a hatch in one of the mine works. They have covered it up for now, but it won’t be long until the Iuzians find it.
The party decide that now is the time to move and so send the dwarf back in with instructions to start the diversion.
A little while later the camp erupts as Dwarves start fighting the captors. The party make a move and sprint into the camp. They find the mine works with the hatch in and smash their way through into the tunnels below. Fleeing down the tunnel away from the camp they reach a maze of tunnels. Dakken seems to know the way through without knowing how and leads them to a flat wall. Dakken and Felicity can see a glowing skull of Therin on the wall. There is a feint indentation approximately the same size and shape of the artefact. Dakken pushes it into the wall where it is taken and the wall slowly slides up to reveal a tunnel. The party move into the tunnel and the wall slides shut behind them. They move down the tunnel, the tunnel is lined with empty suits of ancient Dwarven armour. As they pass them the suits fill with magma and step out of the recesses. They demand that the party remove their weapons and armour before proceeding. They all leave their equipment in a side chamber (except Kyle who holds onto his shortsword) and carry on down into Deephaven!
Deep inside Deephaven
When they arrive in Deephaven they are greeted with a chilly reception. Dakken and Felicity are taken to see… Who interrogates them thoroughly as to how they found the city and who they are. An old priest is thoroughly confused by a human who seems to be a dwarf and by Dakken in general.
They are given their equipment back and taken to see the council of Elders in the central hub of Deephaven. The elders listen to Dakkens request for help in the war but are not interested in helping anyone outside the city walls.
After an appeal to them they decide that the only way they can help is if they can retrieve some power crystals that were stolen from the city. There were 3 crystals stolen but if they can retrieve 1 or 2 of them they will be able to mobilise some of the city defences. They have maps to the last know locations of the crystals. The maps are all from Selidorian times. They are also given a compass device that will point in the direction of the crystals when they are close to them.
The party realise that they will need to get access to the University to translate the maps and figure out where these places are according to today’s maps. Lord Mako offers to help with the use of a submersible that will be able to take them right into the university via the Nyar Div and the canal systems.
Back to School
Getting back on the university campus the first thing Dakken suggested was to see Prof Thorn (see Dakken Grimjaw – Dwarf on Campus). This didn’t go down too well given the last encounter the pair had but Thorn realises the importance of any help towards the war effort. She tells them to seek out Professor Song in the Libraries. They meet up with him and explain what they are looking for. He leads them to a scroll rack surrounded with a magical glow. These scrolls are protected by magical fields to protect them from the elements. After a few attempts at finding the right scroll it is found and the locations of the crystals are pinpointed against a modern map. According to this there are 2 crystals quite close by in the mountains. The easiest way to get there is going to be by Felix Rex Airship so they arrange for Mako and his submersible to take them round the coast to where they can secure one of these. It isn’t long before they are sailing over the mountains in the ship following the compass point.
Too Old for this Shit
They come across a small settlement deep in the mountains. It looks abandoned and has an old wizards tower standing in amongst the smaller thatched buildings. The compass is pointing towards the wizards tower. They decide to rope down from the airship to the roof of the tower.
Kyle decides to check it out first and so swings down and through the window. They hear a scream from Kyle. Dakken smashes through the roof and drops down to find and empty room and no Kyle. They can hear his running off down the stairs and shouting. Dakken sets off after him with the others in tow.
As they bound down the circular staircase wrapping the wall of the tower they meet pockets of goblin resistance. These pockets don’t last long against a charging dwarf and the backup of a ranger.
Kyle had made it all the way to the bottom of the tower where the main door was smashed in. Running outside he is confronted with a Giant. He runs back in followed by a couple of the goblins. The giant hand reaches into the tower and picks off the goblins from the ground floor. Kyle heads back up the stairs to where Dakken and co are smashing their way through a staircase of goblins.
With the Goblins dispatched there was just the issue of the Giant outside to deal with. Kyle grabbed a signal lantern and went back to the roof. A short barrage from the Airship later and the Giant was dead.
Searching the tower with the compass located a box with the first of the crystals stashed in a hole in the wall.
The other crystal was reputed to be in the same area so the group headed out into the village following the compass. The compass leads them around the mountain wall until they reach a cave opening.
There is a snuffling from in the cave. After a short while a Giant drags himself out using only his arms. Clearly crippled he seems no immediate threat to the group but they cannot get into the cave around him. Kyle tells the giant he can get him a plentiful supply of food and leads the giant off towards the tower.
Inside the cave there is nothing except a large heap of dung. The compass is pointing straight to it.
An Apparition of an old dwarf appears. He pleads with Dakken to release him and take his bones back home. He was the dwarf that stole 2 of the crystals and came up here to hide out. The crystals were powerful and so he was able to use them to build this town up. Then the goblins and the giants came. He was eaten by a giant some time ago and the crystals was with him…
Dakken realises that there is nothing else for it but to start digging, Dakken is no stranger to this and seems to have spent a lot of time swimming around in sewage. After a bit of digging later Dakken locates the bones of the old dwarf and the crystal.
They head back to the tower and back onto the airship, only pausing to unleash a volley of weapons onto the remaining giant.
The airship takes them straight back to the rendezvous point with the submersible and they head immediately back to Deephaven.
When they arrive it seems that the Iuzian forces have found the entrance to Deephaven and are massing there. The King is heavily wounded and in the council chambers.
Dakken hands the crystals off to Tinker and starts issuing orders to the party. Felicity takes one of the Halberds from the chamber and attaches a banner to it.
The group board one of the steam monorails and head for the city gates.
The Battle for Deephaven
As the carriage rattles over the gates the group can see the scene below as a line of Deephaven guards are trying to form a shield wall to fend off the hordes of undead. Leading the assault is the large Avatar of Iuz, wading through the masses.
Dakken jumps from the bridge into the throng and starts hacking through the legions aiming for the controlling Necromancers and trying to make pockets of space in front of the shield wall. Felicity follows him with the banner chanting furiously. The sight of the Banner and the dwarven commander seems to buoy the efforts of the shield wall.
Dirk drops off the bridge behind the shield wall and starts arranging men into effective lines.
Kyle ties a rope off onto the bridge and makes an Errol Flynn style diving swing down towards the avatar, Missing with the sword but clashing with a kick.
Realising his element of surprise is now gone but with the avatar distracter Kyle climbs back up onto the overhead railroad. From the distance there is a massive scraping and grinding from the railway tunnel up ahead. In the distance Kyle can see a group of necromancers working their magic.
Climbing into the cab of the train Kyle engages full steam and gets the loco pumped up to full pressure before releasing it off down the track and jumping for cover.
From the tunnel is an almighty crash and explosion of steam and the scraping noise subsides.
While dirk is marshalling the troops in the wall he is beset upon by a gang of Vampires. The leader of the unit seems intent on taking Dirk down and somehow thinks that he will fight in a fair manner. Once her snout and teeth are broken out she realises this was a dangerous underestimation.
By now Dakken has fought his way through Death Knights and necromancers along the front of the shieldwall and is squaring up with the Avatar. The Avatar throws aside the dwarves that were currently occupying him and makes the move. Dakken, <al> and Kyle all make their attacks against the avatar. Dakken using his shield to open the defences of the avatar before throwing in the attacks with his axe.
After many blows to and fro the Avatar drops to his knees ready for Dakken and Kyle to deliver simultaneous killing blows. Once down Dakken takes the crushed helmet of the avatar and places it atop Felicity’s banner for all to see. With this the forces rally once more and start driving the undead hordes down.
From the tunnel the grinding and scraping starts again and 2 massive skeletal hands drag an undead giant from out into the open.
Suddenly loud steam horns start to blare and molten magma starts pouring into recesses in the cavern walls. 2 magma golems step out from the recesses and tackle the undead giant reducing it to steaming ashes in minutes. The golems continue to mop up the rest of the horde in the open and in the tunnels.
The march back to Y’bent
With the Iuzian forces defeated the Golems are released into the Flint Hills to wipe out any traces of evil.
The Party meet back at the council chambers.
The council of Deephaven want to seal themselves back up and play no more part in this war. They are grateful to the efforts though and have granted Dakken a force to take back to Y’bent. He will be given 1500 troops all fully kitted. These will be mixtures of infantrymen and the Mounted drow Lizard riders.
The Magma Golems will be left in the Flint Hills to help with the defence in future times.
A day later and the troops are squared up and ready to leave Deephaven. With Dakken at the head they march out of Deephaven and through the Flint Hills.
Gruff is waiting at the Micanoid outpost at the Y’bent Entrance to the Hills. Dakken Approaches him
“I have some new recruits for you to mould into fighters”
“How many Sir?”
With that the force marches round the corner and into the outpost.
“Gruff, Send a runner to get as many tents and bed rolls as we can muster. We’ll wait until dusklight before we march out as many of these men haven’t seen daylight in some time”.
At the break of dusk, the new recruits of the Black Legion of Therin march out of the Flint Hills in parade squares and down towards the Barracks.
Word has spread and the people of Y’bent are lining the roads to see them including Kal and Katy.
As the army passes them Dakken issues a loud “EYES RIGHT” and each unit block of troops snaps a salute to the rulers as they pass.
We’re Going to Need a Bigger Base!
The next few days are cramped within the barracks as the new troops try to get used to being above ground and sleeping under the stars.
Dakken decides that the barracks are not going to be suitable for the Legion. He organised a trip back into the Flint Hills to the ruins of Goldenhelm. This will be the new base. This city will be rebuilt.
Work begins immediately clearing out the city and rebuilding as much as is possible.
Kal invites Dakken to a meal. At this meal he quips “So are we to start calling you, King Therin of the Flint Hills now?”. Dakken ponders this “That’s not a bad title for the ruler of the city”.
Agreements are drawn up amongst the different factions and contracts are made. Goldenhelm will be a free city open to all. It will provide refuge to those who are homeless as a result of the war. Let all people belong here no matter of creed or race.
Dirk is arranging a trade deal between Deephaven and Felix Rex.
